In this moving image work I use line by drawing out a different shape to make a house, tree and cloud into its shape. I also uses color that contrast each other to create a layer and also adding different tone to make the picture look like 3d dimension
This is my inspiration image from a old Japanese animation called spirited away. I love how the artist uses different tone of color to make this picture lively. All color from this picture are contrast to each other but still gave a calm mood.
In this work I am exploring on different shapes, By drawing each shape and cutting it off. I use one color for each pieces but I use tone techniques to create a dark and light layer in each shapes. After I complete coloring in each shapes I cut out, I arrange it by the color from warm tone to cool tone color.
-Comparison sheet
Fine Art —Comparing your line and tone drawing, describe which were the most successful and why? After I finish this unit I felt that I am more successful in my tonal drawing, I notice that when I’m doing a tonal drawing I can produce a better quality work than my line drawing because I can adjust how light or dark in each work I can be, but in line drawing sometimes my lines are still not good and I can’t control some line in the picture to the way I wanted them to be.
Textiles -Describes how the textures you have chosen influence the appearance of your outcome Mostly in my work I choose to use a flat texture because I wanted my outcome to look clean and nice, by not having much texture in the work.
3D -Using the formal elements explain the different between your 2D and 3D outcomes In line drawing can produce a 3D outcome by drawing some extra part to created the picture dimension but by making 2D line drawing doesn’t need to draw a extra layer to create a dimension because in 2D it just flat.
G&I -Explain color changes meaning? In my own understanding in order to color changes the same outcome will be different because color and tone can give a some mood and feeling about the work.
Photography -Describe how you have used the other formal element within your patterns In each pattern would have a different lines, tone and color. So in order to make a pattern need to use some repeatably line to created created a patterns.
Moving Image -Describe the different between 2D and 3D spaces within your outcome In 2D spaces would be more flat a not complicated but in the other hand 3D spaces would created more dimension by giving tone and depth to the outcome or work.
When I was younger I always curious that how a person designs a building or how they fitted in their design in a specific and limited area. So, I wanted to study about architecture and interior design to develop my skills to help and develop on my family business in the future. I found that in a different place it usually has a different style of designing to communicate and show what this place was all about to people that visited. It extremely interested of how each architecture and interior designer expressing themselves within their design to impact to different person in their mood and how they feel when they are inside that places.
My specific point that I wanted to study interior design is how to combine a tone of the architecture to a furniture inside which it needs to be connecting. A different tone inside each place, the coloring is an important factor in giving a mood for a people. Also, how can I make use of the space that have been given and the flow of each spaces to encourages people to move around to feel excited and wanted to see more what is inside the places as they are walking through it. So, I think that interior design course is the best choice for me to exploring in this specific skill. I wanted to express myself and what am I thinking through my designing to people that visited the places.
I loved to see thing around me when I go out with my friends or my family such as a building design, something being attractive with the design when I first saw them. It gives me a lot inspiration for my work. I am getting this habits from my father, usually when we going out he always be quiet and thinking abut his work or when he see other work he likes to take a look closely and get inspiration to adapt to his work. He always teaches me to observe some architecture or design that I see with him and thinking that what could be fix or improve. So I get lots of inspiration from my father of how he working hard and take note of something he see and trying to adjust it with his work I felt that I very cool and to become like him in the future.
When I outside my classroom I always listen to music and plays guitar, it gives a me a lot of time with myself I think what I really likes. Music is also one way that I can express myself when I do some artwork or homework, it gives me ideas and how I feel relax when I am doing my work or resting. I wanted to study in UK university because I know this city from most of the movies since I was younger and I always dream to visit and study in this country. I love how the building around the city are planned out, I make me feel like I am walking inside the movies that I have seen. Also, many of my father friends are graduated from UK and they were all great in their designing work, It was a big opportunity for myself to have chance to study in this country and follow my dreams.
During this Activity 2 I’ve faced a few difficulties, is a take a picture by myself and a blurry picture. So in this activity I have to take picture of myself wearing mask but in that time no one is in my house except me so I have to take pictures by myself. So I uses my iPad to to take a video of myself and try to screen capture my different action in the video. After I screen capture I found that most of my picture are not clear enough, So I adjust and edited my picture into black and grey picture to cover up some part of my picture to make that my picture looked old.
Example of my black and grey picture
Week 1 Activity 3
Edited pictures for GIF.My GIF.
In this activity I didn’t faced any difficulties or problem during processing this work. IN the other hand I having fun of doing GIF and edited my own pictures which I never did it before. So I think that in this activity I have a lot of fun in doing it.
Week 2 Activity 1
-What are stages of developing an animation from story to finished sequence? 1. Storyboard: The sequence of scenes that take place in the animation or film. 2. Thumbnails: Small rough sketches of how a character might move or behave. 3. Key frames: The main frames of different movement in the animation 4. Extremes: Showing important moving between each Key frames 5. In-between: All the drawn frames in-between the Key frames and extremes
-What is frame rate? What is difference does it make to movement? FPS / Frame rates per second show how many picture of animation would be in this animation. The more frame rate or picture per second is the animation would be more smother but the less frame rate the animation would rough.
-Investigate Glen Keane. What is your favorite Glen Keane animation of a character? My favorite animation of Glen Kean is Tarzan Character
-Why? Explain what aspect of the films do you like? Tarzan is my favorite animation character of Glen Keane because the way how he mixed this character between human and animals. I really give a feeling that Tarzan was raised by a wild animal towards the way he moves and react to what he sees. I found its very emotional to me because the character really seems alive and all the movement of this character are connect, sometimes look like human but react like an animals.
-This week you will make your own sequence using your character design from the previous unit. What action will they perform? My character in unit 5 was inspired by myself and an artist name Annegret Soltau which he would be carrying out a enjoying to music moment and the following action: dancing, jumping and walk toward the speaker.
-When you make you own sequence how will you make the movement feel alive? To make my character feel alive I research how human body move when they are dancing and jumping toward an object. I will us the key movement in my own sequence of my drawing image. I will start by creating a thumbnail sketching based on dancing step and following by a main key frames.
-What frame rate will you use for your time based sequence? Why? I chose to do 12 frames per second because in order to do 24 frames per second it will take me a lot of time to do it. I don’t mine that my animation will be a little bit rough because it was just a test in doing this animation and due limited time.
Week 2 activity 2
Thumbnail sketches of how I wanted my character to move through out the scenes
Storyboard with a rough sketch to see the overall movement of my character
Week 2 activity 3
19 different moving picture
This is my moving animation after I have finish my different sketching from my iPad, after that I upload file to a ezgif.com website to create a moving picture
Week 2 activity 4
Analyzing Unit 7 work -Describe the appearance and character of your mask using visual language? I try to give other to think about musician and dancer in the past which is represented from my mask by showing some painting on the mask as a face painting that they life to use in there show to attracted the audience. My character try to give the audience feeling about new generation boy that love music and some painting which connect to my unit 5 and my mask design, Which he has a some painting on the left hand and some tattoo on the right hand to represent a past rock musician that mostly of them loves to get tattoo on their arm.
-Describe how using time-based movement you have improved the appearance and character of your mask and character? I think using a time-based help my picture to move and feel more alive, also give and idea to an audience of how my character habit and movement are like.
-Explain how your research has influenced the design and the purpose or context of your time based outcomes. Researching help me a lot and give me an ideas of how my character will move around the scene. It hep me to know how I could arrange each part in the scene itself and mostly on my character movement
-Describe the material, process and technique used to make the time-based work. I’ve my iPad to draft everything in my work. Starting from a thumbnail sketches to storyboard, After I finish my story board I try to digitally sketch each part of the scene. Then I captured my screen and took each picture to make a GIF files which I think it easier for me to do it that way.
-Describe how the materials, process and technique used to make the mask help to effectively communicate the character. So I think that the most important thing when I wear my mask and try to communicate with other with just a picture is the motion of the image, that show what is the mood of my character.
-Explain what problem you had in using paper or digital techniques in the project and how you overcame these problem. Explain what would you do differently next time to make improvement? I didn’t have any problem with my digital techniques but their are only things that i could improve in my next work which i knew it after finishing my work. I found that my animation are not that smooth and not quite connected to each other, So I thin that in my next work I should put more scene to connect my animation and make it smoother.
-Analyse how element of your work in this unit could be used to inspire your work in unit 8? So right now if I think that I could some picture editing skill that I have learned to inspire my work in unit 8
Different paper techniques 1.Interlocking- BY cutting 2 piece of card you can join them together
In this method I used 2 piece of cardboard and cut slot inside the cardboard to join them together.
2.Folding- you can join a card or achieve curves and straight lines with this method.
In this method I uses art knife to cut a marks on a cardboard, So It can bend in the way I wanted to to be.
3.Gussets and Darts- in this method is to cutting a section of a paper to create a 3D shape from a flat paper.
So in this method I use a A3 paper and cut it to make a face shape. Then I cut out some part of the paper to fold it and create 3d shape.
4.Combination of every techniques I learned in this activity.
After I learned 3 different paper method, So I combined it to make a mask. Starting with a hair I used Interlocking technique to connect the hair to the mask itself. Next, I used Folding technique to make the nose and connecting it with a gusset technique with is making a extra piece to connect it with the mask that made from a darts techniques. I found that it’s very interesting to combined 3 different techniques that can easy make a mask.
Week 1 activity 2
In this activity I learned about different paper techniques. 1. Pop out- In this techniques I cut mark on the paper in different shape. After I finish making a mark on the paper I push it up to make It pop out from the paper.
2.Curling- I use a scissor to make a mark on the paper and try to roll it to make it curly.
3.Patterns- In this technique I fold the paper into a square and starting to cut out some part of the paper to make a patterns in the paper.
4.Scales- So this technique I try to make it like a animals scales by cutting a curve in the end of the paper. By doing it twice making a layer and feel that it look like animal scales.
5. Concertinas- Is make by folding a paper into a small piece all over each other to make it look like stairs.
6.Feathers- In this technique I have to slowly cut a paper into a feathers shape, after that I slowly cut the feather in both side to make it separate from each others
Week 1 activity 3
Artist mask comparison
Week 1 activity 4
Thumbnails sketches mask design.
So after I have design this 10 thumbnail sketches design all of the design are inspired my primary and secondary research. For primary research It was inspired by my unit 5 character which has a stripes on the face. So in secondary research I get it from unit 6 week 1 activity 3 that I have looked through different artist that make the mask. Firstly the spike and some pop out layer from the face mask I get it from Dag Weiser and I think that the stripes on the face I will use same paper techniques with Asya Kozina paper techniques, I found that she like to use paper techniques in her work.
3 Developed mask design
Week 2 activity 1
Maquette – it is a model of a larger piece of sculpture
side
Front
Side
In this simple model of my mask I planned to make my real mask from a paper due to a reason that paper are easy to fold and shape it. I think that if I use cardboard I would be very difficult for me to fold it into different shapes. In this model I try to see and adjust how my mask will look more 3D which it should be improve in the final piece. I followed design mostly from the final develop mask design in last week activity.
Week 2 activity 2
Final finished mask
Left side
Front
Right side
Sorry I didn’t take the step of how I make the mask
So this is my final mask, I have adjust the shape of my mask differently from a maquette model because I wanted I to look more 3D. As I have do a research on how to mask a 3D mask I try to follow what I have research on making the mask and at the end i get this shape of mask by using a hard paper sticking it together with glue. I found It very tricky to make a mask to look 3D, but at the end I have manage to get it.
Week 2 activity 3
Photography of the mask- In this activity I my mask with some different lighting to get it shadow and the dimension of the mask.
Week 2 activity 4
Analysing
-Describe the appearance and character of your mask using visual language? I try try to make my mask of a 80s to 90s musician that they painted their face on the show. So I try to put some stripes and color to communicate to the audience that my character are a person that painted their faces on the show like the old time musicians.
-Describe how using photography you have improved the appearance and character of your mask? So the photography are mainly show the dimension of the mask and the shadow that are created by the light but I think that it also improved my character by just taking a picture without no one is wearing the mask to represent that everyone can become this person if you try hard enough.
-Explain how your research has influenced the design and purpose or context of your mask? During my research mainly this mask are influenced by my unit 5 character that I have made to be a musician. My unit 5 character also has some stripes on his face so I try to applied it to my mask design too. The only purpose of this mask is to represent the old time musician that are more widely uses the instrument but now some of the musician are not using instrument anymore but they use the technology to make their songs.
-Describe the materials, process and techniques used to make the mask? The material I use to make the mask in only hard paper, scissor and glue. I used a scissor to cut each hard paper into shape and glue it together.
-Describe how the materials, process and techniques used to make the mask help to effectively communicate the character? So I think in using just a paper and glue make it easier to make the mask in 3D shape to communicate that this character are not so flat but I also didn’t make it exactly look like human I just still want to communicate that this is the made up thing to look like the old times and we also can still do thing like the old days.
-Explain what problem you had in using paper and cardboard techniques in the project and how you overcame these problems. Explain what you would do differently next time to make improvement? I’ve faced a few problem during the process of making mask. First, the shape of the mask of to make it look 3D. I try so many times to find out that which way I can make the mask in the 3D shape most. Second, sizing of the mask I finds that its quite difficult to get each pieces of paper in the same size and fits to my head. So I overcame it by just try to adding a layer on top of it and use a ruler to measure my face face length and applied the measurement to each paper piece. I think I should try out more way to see how my mask shape and improve it because I still not satisfied with my mask shape.
Analyse how element of your work in unit 5 and 6 could effectively inspire time-based solution in unit 7? After finish unit 5 and 6, I think that I would use the same concept of unit 5 and 6 on unit 7 work so that I could improve on my concept of the musician character and find out some more information on this concept and applied it to unit 7 work.
In comparing my final work design it ideas from my two inspiration artist, How did I manage to see both artist work and combining they style in my own work. In unit 3 week two I’ chosen 2 artist from week 1 research week, I chosen Niki Yang who is a storyboard writer and voice actor from a cartoon series called The Adventure time and Katsushika Hokusai who is a Japanese traditional painter and print maker during an Edo period. So In my final design work I’ve used Hokusai Japanese traditional style to combined with a new cartoon character style and scene. So in Niki Yang cartoon it is about two main character going out for adventure and face many problem and try overcome it, on the other hand Hokusai work are quite old and tradition. He paint mostly paint view or a traditional Japanese demon. So I started to think how can I combined two style of both artist into my own work. I try to make a cartoon scene that have two main character go out for adventure to saved their friend but they have face a problem which is a Japanese tradition demon that capture there friend.
So during I do this work I think what is the actual context behind this artwork. I have Chosen Niki Yang work is The Adventure time and Hokusai work which is The Great Wave.
So after read through some website I found that I can use this context to connect both of the work together. So during Hokusai paint this picture is during an Edo period, During Edo period Japanese people started to trade their goods with other country and they uses their painting artwork paper to wraps the good to send it oversea. When other country have received their goods they have noticed that the wrapping paper is an beautiful Japanese traditional painting, They started to take those wrapping paper to hang it on the wall as a beautiful artwork. After that Japanese artwork has become more well-known from that point, It is like the adventure of the Japanese traditional artwork around the world. So it can be link up with The adventure time by it context that Adventure time also has a plot of two characters going out for adventure.
As I doing this activity I learned a lot of thing by myself. I think some of my work are okay but in the other hand I think that I have to improve myself. During this week when I have a online class sometimes I can’t manage to get in class because I slept over, So I missed a lot of thing during this week online lesson I have to improved myself to be on time. Another point during this week when I have received the project brief and work I didn’t start to do it right away. So in this point i started to do my work just slightly before the deadline and I didn’t do the best work I could. So I think in the next unit I should start the work early and be on time.
In primary research, As I walk around I saw many artworks in a different styles. In secondary research, After I finish doing primary research at kettles yard I’ve choose few artwork that I like. I do a research about the the artworks that I choose from kettles yard to know what material the artist uses and who is the artist who the artwork. I’ve choose fox sketch from all the artwork i chose from kettles yard. First I develop the original sketch into my colour drawing, After I change a drawing picture to a shelf design in my own style. I try to use the shape of my drawing and thinks which way I could turn it into a shelf. I think the successful in my design is that I can bring the fox shape and turn it into a shelf and I think I could improve on the function of the design which my design have just only the space to put things on.
How can I improve my primary and secondary research? I think I should prepare for what I’m looking for in my research because when I go to kettles yard I waste a lots of times by walking around and don’t know what I’m looking for.
